Summary

The Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) is the largest public health surveillance system in the U.S, monitoring multiple health-related behaviors among high school students. YRBSS measures health-related behaviors and experiences that can lead to death and disability among youth and adults. Results help monitor health trends, identify emerging issues, and plan and evaluate programs that can help improve adolescent health.

In April 2025, the ICR was updated to remove questions on transgender identity in response to Executive Order 14168. In addition, the CDC National Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System website has a banner indicating that content may be modified or removed in the future. Although the scope of any future changes is uncertain, current administration priorities and executive actions suggest there is potential for changes to the data collection instrument or its associated documentation.
